Canon Powershot SX60 16.1MP Digital Camera$449.00
Canon sx60 HS impresses with a record-breaking zoom lens and many options for hobby photographers. The amazonproductsreviews practice review shows whether the operating concept of the bridge camera is set up – and whether the picture quality is correct.
Intermediate photographers love to snap their nose over bridge cameras. They consider the massive digital cams rather as entry-level cameras for occasional knifes, which confuse the huge zoom lens with proficiency. A bridge camera has its advantages. It is just as good in the hand as a SLR camera, almost always offers many adjustment possibilities and the neglected zoom lens still replaces a whole case with interchangeable lenses. A great concept – as long as the picture quality is right. In this respect, we have looked at Canon’s new Canon sx60 HS.
Their zoom lens sets a new record. It delivers a fabulous range of focal lengths of 21 to 1365 millimeters (corresponding to 35mm), which corresponds to a 65x zoom. At the moment, this does not create any other bridge camera. Only the DSC-H400 from Sony (63x zoom), the DMC-FZ72 from Panasonic (60x) and the Nikon Coolpix P600 (60x) play in the same league.
The Canon sx60 HS is the new bridge camera flagship from Canon. Although it sets a new record with 65x zoom, it does not have the longest telephoto. Evaluation of the Review: New record zoom in the bridge cameras
The Canon sx60 HS is the new bridge camera flagship from Canon. Although it sets a new record with 65x zoom, it does not have the longest telephoto. This title still belongs to the rather inconspicuous Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H400. Canon has extended the focal range compared to the two years older predecessor Canon PowerShot SX50 HS both in the direction of the teles and the wide angle.
Costs should the Canon sx60 HS $449.00 in the recommended retail price. For that one gets synonymous already good DSLRs – but not with such a zoom. Apart from this, the road price of the bridge camera has decreased so often to a much lower level.
[Note. d. Red .: The Canon sx60 HS zoom record was surpassed almost half a year after the release of the Canon SX60 HS – from the Nikon Coolpix P900 with 83x zoom up to 2000 mm.]
Canon sx60 HS Housing: swivel display & viewfinder
With a weight of 650 grams, the Canon sx60 HS is a big chunk – no wonder, because so much glass, as in the optics, weighs just its part. Compared to the previous model, the bridge camera weighs significantly more, and the dimensions (9.3 x 12.8 x 11.4 cm) also have a few millimeters at all ends. The camera is good in the hand according to the tests.
The Canon sx60 HS display is up to 3 inches to the current standard and offers with 922,000 pixels a good resolution. In addition, there is a swivel and swivel joint, around which the image can be moved upwards, downwards and 180 ° forward. However, the bridge camera still offers no touchscreen – a pity.
Also on board is a small viewfinder of 0.2 inches. Its resolution is also good with 922,000 pixels, but the preview is so small that manual focus is hardly possible. As an avoidance option with a lot of sunlight, he is nevertheless a great thing. A feature is missing according to the tests: An eye sensor, which allows an automatic change between viewfinder and monitor operation.
Operation: Liquid operation for occasional photographers
For whom the Canon sx60 HS is conceived is clear with regard to the controls: ambitious occasional photographers, who work primarily with the full automatic and do not constantly work on the exposure settings.
Manual exposure settings are possible. On the top is a large mode dial, on which, in addition to the classic PASM classification, there are also some quick accesses and two customize positions. Above is a knurled wheel – of which the Canon SX60 HS has only one.
On the back is a four-way button with quick accesses as double assignments. The quick access to the exposure correction is over it. Fast access to ISO setting or RAW mode is missing.
If you want, you can take pictures here and there in the semi-automatic or manual shooting, adjust the ISO strength or switch to RAW mode – but you have to go to the menu frequently. On the other hand, the operation is kept simple by the manageable number of keys.
Canon sx60 HS Optics: new record
With its 65x zoom, the Canon sx60 HS sets a new record. The focal spectrum ranges from 21-1365 mm. This is beside the extremely strong Tele also a very good, above-average wide angle. The initial shades are f3,4 to f6,5 but only average – a pity.
An image stabilizer is on board. Otherwise the long focal lengths would not be used. The works well, however, he also at 1365 mm only deficient to keep the picture calm. This, however, was hardly to be expected, because even a good image stabilizer cannot do miracles. The macrocodes is felled with a close focusing distance of 0 cm from the front lens. This makes very impressive close-ups.
Canon Powershot sx60 HS Image quality: standard sensor
The sensor also makes it clear that the Canon sx60 HS would like to play less in the high-end range, than on the pragmatic Consumer level. With a size of 1 / 2.3 inches, the CMOS sensor is typical of the digital camera and bridge camera class. It resolves with 16 megapixels. This may sound little in the ears of a lay person, but it is better than if such a small sensor would be overcharged. The ISO range is from ISO 100 to 3,200. Class: the images can also be saved in the loss, because of the compression-free RAW mode.
And in the Canon sx60 HS review? By growing. The noise behavior is clearly visible in the 100% view at the low ISO levels. From ISO 400 onwards a clearly blurred drawing can be seen, since here the noise suppression so strongly accesses, the fine details smoothly ironed. This trend continues with rising ISOs. ISO 1,600 is the limit, ISO 3,200 should only be used in an emergency. Unfortunately, the relatively low light intensity results in the critical ISO steps being reached quickly.
The sharpness was slightly lower in the test than in the predecessor – could be due to the larger zoom, which requires a compromise in image quality. But there are positive points for the color representation. They are not quite on the point, but this is no problem with the target group targeted here.
Bottom line, the Canon sx60 HS is more suitable for situations with sufficient light. A classic “weather camera” with telescope qualities.
Canon sx60 HS Equipment: Round thing
With the equipment is Canon with the SX60 HS completely up to date. On board is, of course, a video mode. This solves with a maximum of full-HD quality and allows many manual settings. The film quality is good according to the tests.
An NFC-enabled Wi-Fi module is also integrated. This allows wireless data transmission, remote control of the camera via smartphone and the feeding of the GPS data from the smartphone into the EXIF files of the photos (keyword “Geotagging”).
Also included is the zoom framing assistant. It also allows you to quickly find the subject at full zoom. Do you know the phenomenon that when you look through binoculars, you cannot find the motif, because you lose the orientation with such a strong magnification? This is solved by Canon by showing the enlarged picture in a “non-zoomed” frame, where you can orientate in which direction you are aiming.
There are also a number of effect and color filters on board, including HDR, miniature, fish eye and black and white. According to the manufacturer, the battery runs about 340 releases. This is only moderate, experience is the accumulators but always more lasting than the manufacturer specified.
Canon sx60 HS Speed: solid series
Series can record the Canon sx60 HS according to manufacturer with 6.4 images / sec. A solid value, but not of the stool, especially since the predecessor was faster. In practice, the Canon camera nevertheless creates about 8.6 pictures / sec, which they but only six frames long. Then the speed drops. In RAW mode, only 1.5 frames / sec are available.
Also the triggering speed cannot convince completely. The bridge camera is only a wide angle camera. In tele, the time until the click is above our limit of half a second, in low light even more than a second. After all, the start time is fixed. After only 1.5 seconds the first photo is mostly in the box.
Conclusion on the Canon sx60 HS
Even if the Canon sx60 HS is the most class-class bridge camera model from Canon, it is in terms of image quality rather to the average photographer, who would like to snap. For comparison, many top-of-the-range cameras offer the possibility of adjustment, an above-average sensor and correspondingly better picture quality come very close to professional DSLRs, e.g. the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10, the Fujifilm X-S1 or the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000.
The Canon SX60 HS makes it rather easy for her owner. Their operating concept follows the line, in a camera everything underneath, which one could use of focal lengths and setting possibilities as an occasional photographer ever. A package, everything in it.
For a SLR camera, however, whose most favorable representative even with lens for a lower price than the SX60 HS to get (eg the Canon EOS 100D), one would have to buy several lenses before you even approximately the focal range circumference, the Canon sx60 HS offers – if, of course, the picture quality of a bridge camera cannot keep up with a DSLR.
